The Center's former chairman, Richmond Mayo Smith of Boston, has successfully ended his fast, which he began two weeks before Thanksgiving in recognition that "we in the United States of America have been especially graced with great gifts, and by accepting and using these gifts wisely, we can build a future of peace, justice and beauty for our children." Please read the heartfelt essay by this octogenarian, grandfather, and retired educator who still has much to teach us. His essay is shared on the front page of our website.

Instead of Empire: What Future for the United States?
To explore possibilities for an alternative to empire America, Yes magazine invited five people to shed the light of their experience, spiritual leadership, and knowledge of world affairs. This is not a debate on whether we should go to war but an exploration of what might happen if the US chose a path that is neither the Clinton-promoted future of corporate globalization, nor the Bush Doctrine of endless war.
Includes Former US Ambassador to NATO Harlan Cleveland, Presiding Episcopal Bishop Frank T. Griswold, and European Union Futurist Marc Luyckx.

SUPPORT CHANGE - AND IMPROVE YOUR SELF
Every month we highlight a new book which we feel may enrich your life; the purchase of which helps support our non profit organization.
The books of Patrick Harpur, British philosopher and historian of mythology, have always been difficult to find in the US, but a domestic printing has at last been arranged for his two best titles. Fans of the late Joseph Campbell will be particularly delighted to discover this new voice.
In The Philosopher’s Secret Fire (available now), Harpur asks "How is it that the same myths are perpetuated through different cultures at different times? Could it be something to do with the universal imagination?"

In Daimonic Reality (available for delivery in January), Harpur explores the history of the balance between the material world and the world of spirit and myth. Dr. John Mack says, "In the Western worldview there exists [the] so-called objective (or 'outside') world and the subjective (or 'inner') world. There have been various attempts to show that these two worlds are not all that exists. Patrick Harpur's Daimonic Reality is one of the most eloquent expressions of that effort."
